Monika Teal - Artist Statement
I work from the insight that art is a form of social material. My art is meant to mediate and inform. I focus on recurring themes, such as innocence, magic and the loss of magic in our lives. My paintings and sculptures come from my personal life, reflected by lore, stories and myths. It is grounded in my past and in my heritage.
As a painter for forty years, I work in layers, inviting chaos and continually learning from the process. In my 3D works, my materials are traditional and non traditional. They lend themselves to what I perceive to be a part of my world.
As an artist, it is my calling and my curse to feed the muse. No matter what else I do in my life, that creative flame has to be kept alive. It is why I am here.
