Art Heals: Military Veterans Drop-In Group

  • InterUrban ArtHouse 8099-8001 Newton Street Overland Park, KS, 66204 United States (map)

Mask making

This drop in group is designed as a creative outlet for people who have served and are serving in the US Armed Forces. These art sessions will offer participants a gentle opportunity to explore the “stuff” that is hard to talk about related to military service and post deployment life. These groups are free of charge, and no art background is necessary for participation.

With a partnership between InterUrban ArtHouse and Operation Art, these sessions will be co led by art therapist, Sherri Jacobs, MS, LMFT, MA, ATR, and artists, Ada Koch and Sydney Pener.

National Geographic Magazine recently wrote a feature story on the power of making masks with military veterans. So often, there simply are no words to describe the things that happened during deployment, and so often people mask their true emotions to cope with daily life. Sublimating these experiences into a mask can be a powerful vehicle for growth and change, and to symbolically express inside and outside emotions.  No art experience necessary for participation
