Sherri is an art therapist, licensed clinical marriage and family therapist, artist and founder of Heartland Art Therapy (located at IUAH). This series is part of her project award through IUAH's current NEA Grants for Arts award:
"2024 will likely be a contentious and challenging year in the United States in this extremely polarized era. This project will include six interactive, creative workshops to learn useful tools to navigate these complex times. These sessions can be attended as stand alone events , but will flow well together if participants choose to attend the entire series."
The classes include:
Boundaries May 8th 12-1 pm
This workshop will offer tools for setting healthy emotional boundaries. Participant will be guided through a step by step painting experience of a visual and creative “boundary map” on a 6x6 inch canvas. No art experience required.
Perspective May 15th 12-1
When we can incorporate perspective into a situation, we can often gain insight, wisdom. This workshop will offer participants a chance to process an experience or time period using this technique for emotional healing. As people create a coherent narrative of a situation, research shows this is an important element for healing from something traumatic.
Nuance May 22nd 12-1
Participants will be introduced to concepts of Visual Intelligence and Visual Thinking Strategy principles while creating simple optical illusion drawings.
Mask June 19th 6:30-8
Masks are present in almost every culture and are found in many ancient societies. Participants will make their own masks to explore healthy emotional boundaries and when it is safe to take their mask off.
Identity June 25th 6:30-7:30
This workshop will explore our complex, multifaceted identities through torn paper collage self-portraits.
